There’s hardly a sport out there which is more macho than rugby. And no, we’re not talking about that ghastly version called American football – rugby is played without all that protective gear and fancy rules, and the only equipment you have is teeth protector. So what happens when a captain of Batley Bulldogs comes out as gay?
Keegan Hirst, a towering 6 foot 4 Hulk of a man, decided to come out last month. After struggling for years with his true feelings, Keegan came out right before the match in an interview for Daily Mirror. Stating that “Now I feel like I’m letting out a long breath that I’ve held in for a long time”, this remarkable 27 year old athlete publicly expressed his admiration and thankfulness for all the support he got.
His list of supporters included his teammates, his wife (yes, he’s married and father of two), Harry Potter’s Emma Watson, former rugby player Gareth Thomas (who himself came out back in 2009) and Sir Elton John. Sir Elton expressed his support for the new openly out sport star and gave him an advice or two.
We wish Keegan all the best in the future – who knows, he might even visit Brighton for a vacation!
