Top gay fashion designers (part I)

Tom Ford

Tom Ford is a man who needs no introduction – he embodies the American dream. Starting as a low level assistant, he worked his way up to become the creative director of Gucci. The rest is history – he revolutionized the aging label, and later founded his own brand. Bonus: in the turbulent world of high couture and gay celebs, Tom is happily married to Richard Buckley, his partner since ’86.

Yves Saint Laurent

While a younger reader might not recognize Saint Laurent, every attentive gay man should – haute couture and prêt-à-porter were his undisputed domains. A trendsetter, jetsetter and creative genius, Saint Laurent is still considered to be one of the most influential fashion designers in history, a man who helped shape the fashion world we know today. Like Tom Ford, he was happily partnered for decades.

Marc Jacobs

There’s only one thing you need to know about Marc Jacobs – he worked for freakin’ Louis Vuitton! A hardworking and extremely talented designer, Marc has his own brands and is happily partnered. He was the youngest designer ever to receive Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Perry Ellis Award for “New Fashion Talent”, back in ’87.

Tim Gunn

Arguably, Tim Gunn isn’t the biggest name on our list – but it’s certainly most popular and well-known. Gunn’s make it work is now part of the urban dictionary, and his mentoring skills and encyclopedic knowledge of fashion world are almost legendary. Gunn has appeared on numerous TV shows, movies, documentaries and reality programs, teaching America and the world what (not) to wear and how to make great fashion.
