It’s difficult to list every last gay character that appeared in video games over the last few decades: from small roles like Kung Jin in Mortal Combat X to Sam in Gone Home (which is a bit indie, but still counts), we’ve come a long way from Birdo, trans villain from Super Mario Bros. 2.
Mass Effect 3 was a fantastic game, and it also brought us Steve Cortez and the infamous “Mass Effect Gay Sex Scene”. If that’s how people imagine gay sex, no wonder they’re confused about everything else: it was just shirtless embracing and cuddling, nothing more. But it’s still nice to have a gay plot in one of the big mainstream titles.
Kian Alvane of the Dreamfall Chapters fame is one of the bad-ass gay protagonists – he’s wielding a sword!
Dragon Age: Inquisitions had a plethora of gay characters, but we liked Krem (though technically he’s trans) and Dorian the best!
