If you are into athletics you’ve probably heard of Olympic pole vaulter and world champion Shawn Barber – and now you’re gonna hear something else about him. He just came out as a proud gay man!
“Gay and proud! Thank you to my parents for being such a great support. I continue to grow as a person and have a great support group. My parents are my greatest support and have helped me through a lot recently. To my friends, you are always my friends and i love you too!” he wrote on Facebook.
Barber won the world championship in the pole vault in 2015 and came in 10th at Rio summer Olympics.
Someone commented his Facebook post: “You don’t even know me, but I want to chime in my support. I wish the world was different, but it remains a challenge for us all to be and to present who we are. It should be irrelevant, but your coming out makes it easier for others. Thanks Shawn.”
